Ice skating is a great way to stay physically fit and have FUN! The Learn to Skate program follows the curriculum of the U.S. Figure Skating program. The schedule includes classes for all skill levels ages 3 through Adults.

The Onyx Learn to Skate program is the feeder program for the
Onyx-Suburban Skating Academy  & Suburban FUNdamental Hockey.

SKATING LEVELS
(Prices are based on a 7-week program)

  • Parent Tot
    (Price: $100)
    For skaters ages 3-5 years of age with little or no skating experience. Learn basic balance and skating skills in a fun, introductory class with a parent or adult friend.  Participating adults should be able to skate.

  • Snowplow Sam 1
    (Price: $90)
    For skaters ages 3
    -5 years old with little or no skating experience. Learn basic balance and skating skills in an age-appropriate setting.  Classes are limited to six skaters.
  • Snowplow Sam 2-3
    (Price: $85)
    For skaters ages 4-5 who have passed Snowplow Sam 1 or who have previously taken skating lessons. Develop preliminary coordination and strength necessary to maneuver on the ice in an age-appropriate setting.
  • Basic 1-5
    (Price: $85)
    Ages 6 and up.  All beginner skaters will begin in Basic 1.  Classes cover "basic" fundamental skating skills such as forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers and turns.  Skills build on each other as skaters progress through each level.
  • Edge 1-3
    (Price: $130)
    Skaters will rotate with two instructors and recieve a 15-minutes freestyle lesson and a 15-minute moves in the field lesson in a class size with a 5-1 student-to-instructor ratio, a 30-minute optional practice time, and a 15-minute off-ice class with an instructor following thier ice time. Skaters at these levels are reccomended to join the Onyx-Suburban Skating Academy. Please see the Skater's Edge Accelerated Bridge Program for additional information.

  • Adult
    (Price: $85)
    For skaters 16 and older. Class designed for the mature skater interested in learning how to skate.

SKATER'S EDGE

Private Instruction
(Price: $80)

  • For skaters in Basic 4 and above that are interested in obtaining additional instruction to further accelerate the development of their skills or those skaters interested in joining the Onyx-Suburban Skating Academy.
  • Four 20-minute PRIVATE lessons are arranged with an OSA staff professional on ice that is designated for Onyx-Suburban Skating Academy members and restricted to only 24 skaters per session!

REGISTRATION PROCEDURES

  • Current Student Priority Registration: Current students may re-register AFTER they have been evaluated on the second to last week of the current series.  It is recommended that current students do so at this time in order to reserve their spot in the next series.  Registration will take place in the ballet room.
  • Family Registration: Family registration is open to siblings of skaters who are currently enrolled in the LTS program and to anyone involved in an Onyx program. (ie:  Rochester Hockey Club) 
  • Open Registration: Open registration is open to the public.  Numbered tickets will be distributed five minutes before registration begins.
  • Phone-In Registration: Phone-in registrations will be accepted following open registration.
  • Refund/Credit Policy: Please be aware that there is a NO refund policy. Credits will not be issued after the second week of classes.
  • Skate Rental: Skate rental may be prepaid at the time of registration. If enrolled in a Wednesday or Friday morning or afternoon class, the fee is $2 per class. If enrolled in Wednesday or Friday evening or Saturday class, the fee is $3 per class.
  • Free Open Skate Pass: LTS participants will be given a pass to attend one Onyx open skating sessions for free. The student must present his/her pass at the front desk during open skating hours. Please see the activity schedule located in the brochure racks near the entrance of the arena for open skate times or check our web site. Please note skate rental is not included. The pass will expire the last day of the current series.
  • Make-Up Classes: Due to the size of the program, we are unable to make up classes. It is recommended that the skater use their free open skate pass to practice their skills.
